What are e-portfolios?
e-portfolios continue to be seen as a key component in personalising the learning experience. Although the numerous e-portfolio tools currently available vary in design and features, they are all essentially personal online spaces where the learner can store materials and record experiences relevant to their studies.
These materials and experiences can then be presented for a range of purposes, including reflecting on prior learning; presenting achievements and skills to employers or learning providers; or as a means of providing richer evidence for assessment. An important aspect of e-portfolio use is that the ongoing process of producing a portfolio is as important material produced.
There are many ways to get involved with e-portfolios, from an exploratory toe-in-the-water using blogs or other freely available tools, to investing in a full-blown e-portfolio product. The RSC can help you explore the opportunities that e-portfolios might bring and decide on an approach to suit your needs.
e-ILPs (Individual Learning Plans) are replacing paper-based ILPs for assessment purposes. Some providers have introduced institutional e-ILPs which are owned by the provider rather than the student.
e-portfolios or PDPs (Personal Development Plans) are reflective and are owned by the learner. They would go with the learner at transition. A national model is being developed for the purposes of integration with the Unique Learner Number and UK information management but this may be some time off.
The RSC can provide advice on what is available and which products are being used. We can also refer to those providers who may be able to provide help.
